October approaches

October is a time of change on Maldon’s waters:

  • Night permit holders can use 3 rods on ALL venues from 1st Oct.
  • Ashmans Farm and the two River Blackwater sections at Braxted (lock number 5118) cease to be Maldon AS fisheries on 1st Oct.
  • Night fishing starts on Bog Grove but don’t expect to get much sleep at this heavily stocked venue, at least until after the first few frosts.
  • Rook Hall and Whitehouse Farm close for their winter shooting breaks.
  • Night fishing at Slough House Farm ceases at the end of October.

Day Breaming

Two anglers shared a 28 bream haul at Totham Pit on Sunday.  We don’t have any photos of that haul but the Membership Secretary turned up late in the day to land his first 7lb+ bream from the venue.  He takes up the story……

I arrived at Totham Pit late afternoon before the rain set in to find 5 cars in the car park.  I love the shallows at this time of the year but the previous Sunday the resident pair of swans had made my attempts to fish a three foot deep swim almost impossible so I opted for the deeper margins of the wooded bank.  My peperami over groundbait approach only brought one bite but it was a 7lb 4oz bream.  This is my third MAS 7lb+ bream, the others coming from Whitehouse Farm (7lb 10oz) in April and my PB 7lb 13oz from Slough House Farm last year.  I know that Little Park and Little London have both produced 7lb+ bream in the past so I could yet increase my tally.

Single Night Tickets Scrapped

At the committee meeting on Wed 5th May it was agreed to stop selling £10 one off night tickets with immediate effect.  Night fishing at Totham Pit, Howells, Slough House Farm and Beckingham Hall is now strictly for full season night permit holders only.

Workparty update

Laurence would like to thank Tom Howlett, Jack Childs, Carl Harris, Pete Newell and Paul Kemp for all their help at the Totham Pit work party on Sun 28th March where a very successful tree trimming exercise was undertaken.

The next workparty will be held on Sun 25th April at Slough House Farm to clear swims, carry out general maintenance and cut the weed wire to length.  Please meet (as usual) at the Totham Pit container at 8am (we appreciate that this date coincides with the carp match final at Totham Pit but not everyone was fortunate enough to qualify…).

End of Season Workparty

The next workparty will be held at Slough House Farm and Totham Pit on Sunday 28th March.  If you are able to assist in any way, however small, please meet Laurence at the container at Totham Pit at 8am.

Workparty on Sunday 28th February

The next working party will be held on Sunday 28th February.  Please meet up at the Totham Pit container at 8am.  The exact nature of the works to be carried out will be decided on the day but are likely to include some or all of the following dependant upon turnout:

Totham Pit tidy up and swim trimming.

Bog Grove tidy up and swim trimming (the access track also requires maintenance work and a tree surgeon will deal with the large fallen tree).

Slough House Farm entrance and fence repairs.

Laurence would like to thank all of the regular attendees at work parties throughout 2009 and looks forward to your continued support in 2010.
