Help with coaching juniors wishing to learn to fish

The coaching sessions organised by the Angling Coaching Initiative in conjunction with KDAA and MAS have been most successful since the first one held on the 19th May with up to ten participants at sessions.  Although ACI have a pool of Volunteer Coaches it is not sufficiently large enough to ensure they can provide one to one coaching particularly during the summer school holiday period owing to many of the volunteers being unavailable due to their own holidays and other commitments.  If you are able to help, even for just one or two sessions can you please contact Chris Burt on 07917 781299 or via email at chris@candjb.co.uk.  It is fun and most rewarding.

Future dates and venues are on the ACI website  https://anglingcoachinginitiative.co.uk/events-calendar  along with a blog of the sessions held to date.

The next two sessions where we more help would definitely be appreciated are next Wed 15th Aug at Rook Hall and on Wed 22nd Aug at Bog Grove.

Learn how to fish

You might have caught some of Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse fishing for tench, bream, roach and rudd on TV last night and thought “I fancy giving that a go myself”.  If you did but you have no fishing tackle or any idea how to get started then the answer is at hand.  Contact Chris Burt at Angling Coaching Initiative who will be very happy to advise you further and can book you onto one of his angling coaching days.  All tackle will be provided for you to use free of charge on the day and you will only be asked to pay from £7.50 per session to cover the cost of the bait.  Chris is running several coaching days across a variety of Maldon AS and Kelvedon DAA fisheries and he can be contacted by phone on 07917 781299, by email at chris@candjb.co.uk, via the  Angling Coaching Initiative website which can be found at https://anglingcoachinginitiative.co.uk/ or by post at 3 Great Cob, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 6LA.

A happy student with a fine Tench landed at Rook Hall during a coaching session earlier this month.

Rook Hall will be closed on Sun 17th Jun

All three lakes at Rook Hall will be closed to members on Sunday 17th June (Fathers Day) for the Blackwater Country Show.  More information regarding the show can be found at http://www.blackwatercountryshow.co.uk/.  Angling Coaching Initiative will be running a coarse fishing coaching session on the trout lake next to the Maldon Angling Society stall on the day.

First Coaching Day for Angling Coaching Initiative – 19th May

Our first coaching day for ACI, and what a result. The first event for our voluntary coaching for Juniors and Adults alike, and the culmination of a lot of hard work by everyone, but this was the fun part!

We had 11 learners and seven of us to teach them, on a beautiful sunny day over at a small enclosed, tree lined water, Slough House West just north of Maldon. So all the tackle we’d acquired or bought with the Sport England Grant finally got an outing and did us proud for results. Everyone caught fish from the start, with roach being the main species, there was one lovely tench, plus perch, rudd and a few gudgeon and even the odd eel too. The carp though proved elusive, even the one that was hooked proved too much for the four metre elasticated whip it was hooked with and made its escape.

We heard lovely comments about how the day went, such as from one Dad “he had a great time, he’s been bragging to everybody he caught more fish than me!”  One girl caught far more than her brother too and she delighted in reminding him of it throughout the whole time.

Everyone loved it, and are rebooking to join us again. Interested? Then join us; enrol, book in with us or let us know if you’d like to learn more. Whether you’re just starting out, or wanting to get back into fishing again now, we cater for every level of ability! Join us long-term too, we can expand your skills as far as you wish!

Our web site is https://anglingcoachinginitiative.co.uk/ and the Angling Trust now have all our events listed, go to http://www.getfishing.org.uk/?s=&region-category%5B%5D=34&event-time under Eastern England.

Voluntary Coaching

I can now confirm that Sport England have officially approved the grant application for these coaching sessions.

I am delighted to advise that we have set up a coaching scheme for Junior anglers. This is a joint venture with Kelvedon & District Angling Association & Maldon Angling Society and the plan is to hold coaching sessions throughout the May-October period on a variety of waters, split between the two clubs. Those enrolled will be welcome at all sessions, & we’ll cater for both novices and those who already fish.

We will be running this through accredited Angling Trust Level 2 Coach’s Graham Garnham & Chris Burt, who both hold Enhanced DBS checks, Safeguarding & Protecting Children, First Aid course etc.

We’ll be teaching them everything to get them hooked, from starter sessions using a 4 metre whip, onto full tuition on float rods, feeders, and pole fishing. Every variation we can in fact, the aim is to capture their interest and give them a sport for life!

So if you would like to enrol into the scheme please let us know, parents who’d like to fish too are welcome, though you might have to share the same swim. There will be nominal charges only for bait and tackle replacement, this is a voluntary scheme.

We need Volunteer Assistants as well, if you’d be prepared to help at some or all the sessions, can you please contact me? You would only do as many or as few sessions as you want. We are already funding three of our Volunteers to take the Angling Trust level 1 Coaching qualification, to strengthen our team. We plan to role this scheme out to other clubs too in the future so you can join us with that in mind.
