Totham Pit stocking policy

A few members have asked now that we have a new ten year lease on Totham Pit what our stocking policy is.  Based on previous experience we are proceeding cautiously and with this in mind we have moved two dozen carp from Bog Grove to Totham Pit with the owners consent to monitor how they fare next spring.  If all goes well we have purchased thirty carp averaging low doubles to stock into Totham Pit next autumn.  These are a good strain of fish that have grown to 25lb+ in some of our other waters so hopefully they will do likewise in Totham Pit.

Howells carp match result

Our annual carp match was held at Howells over the weekend of 24th-25th Sep.  7 anglers fished and 17 fish were caught for a combined weight of 259lb.

1st place and retaining his title was Graham Surridge with 5 fish for 93lb 14oz.

2nd was Tony Hayden with 6 fish for 59lb 4oz

Winner of the Alan Hare Cup for the biggest fish caught in the competition was Shaun Birnie with a Common of 27lb 10oz, the same fish that won it last year – Breeze Block.

Thanks go to our sponsors Specimen Carp Baits for their bait prize donations.

The average size of carp caught was 15lb 3oz and £70 was raised for the carp stock fund.

MAS garments make the perfect Christmas gifts

If you are wondering what to buy the Maldon AS member in your life don’t forget that we have a number of hoodies, hats, caps and shirts in stock in various sizes.  Please contact Denise or Paul on 01621 857427 if you would like to make a purchase.

We can’t be certain if wearing a MAS hoodie helped Graham Surridge catch the heaviest weight of carp in the Howells carp match final two years running but we can’t rule it out either!

Carp match at Howells on weekend of 24th-25th September

Howells will be closed to non-competitors from 8am on Sat 24th Sep to 1pm on Sun 25th Sep for the 24 hour carp match.  The draw for swims will take place at 10am on Sat.  I believe that there are still a few places left so if you are interested please contact Dean Andrews on the number listed in the rulebook.  Remember that this is a rare opportunity for any member who hasn’t got a Howells night permit to fish an overnighter at the venue.

New Totham Pit and Bog Grove licence secured

Good news, after two years of negotiations we have been successful in securing a new ten year licence for Totham Pit and Bog Grove.  This at last puts any rumours to bed regarding the future of these two lakes within our portfolio.  Maintenance works have continued on both of these fisheries during the last two years including the repair of paths, bridges, steps and swims plus numerous trimming up exercises.  This new ten year agreement allows us to extend this to include fish stocks and gate upgrades.

Please treat our biggest asset with care

Members and guests are reminded to treat the fish they catch with the respect they deserve and always use a suitable sized landing net and an unhooking mat.  Current rule (6.9) states that an unhooking mat is only compulsory when fishing for carp and pike but this will change on the 1st April 2017 to try and prevent fish of any species being laid on the ground.  This rule change does not take immediate effect to allow everyone plenty of time to buy a mat that is suitable for both them and the fish they catch.  Please ensure in hot weather that your mat is sufficiently ‘wetted down’ or covered with a wet weigh sling to further protect your catch.
