Next Chelmer Canal Trust Work Party

Next Chelmer Canal Trust Work Party – Saturday morning, 5th January 2019

Best wishes for 2019 from the Chelmer Canal Trust.

For many of us it’s a time to make New Year resolutions. If you are seeking a worthy New Year resolution, if you don’t already do so, why not consider attending one of our CCT events in 2019 – a talk or a visit, or maybe take part in one of our monthly work parties? Dates for our events in 2019 are on the Forthcoming Events page of our website (click here to go there).

For over 15 years one of our major initiatives has been the removal of Floating American Pennywort from the Navigation. As some will know, at one point practically the entire length of the Navigation was closed as a result of blockages of large parts of the system by huge rafts of weed. One of the first organisations in the UK to take on the removal and management of pennywort, we have developed, often by trial and error, a range of techniques which are effective in dealing with this non-native weed. Having volunteers with a range of skills and equipment has meant that we have achieved great success, ensuring that over many years now the Navigation has been fully-navigable. Ironically, with the Chelmer Canal Trust having got the invasive weed fully under control, others have now joined in with pennywort-removal. Of course we welcome this and are exploring best ways of ensuring that working in partnership has maximum impact.

Our Work Parties in 2019 will continue using the now long-established format: the first Saturday morning of each month (occasionally changing if this coincides with a Bank Holiday Weekend or if no one is available to lead the work party on that date), replaced by once-a-month Wednesday evenings during June, July and August.

Our first work-party of 2019 takes place on Saturday, 5th January. We’ll be meeting at the mid-point of the Navigation, Paper Mill Lock, setting off at 9am. If you aren’t sure how to get there put CM3 4BS into your SatNav, smartphone app, etc. or click on this link for a map of the area: Paper Mill Map

Parking is in the Boaters’ Car Park which is on the left immediately before the river bridge if travelling from the Danbury side of the Navigation. (A short distance on from  the entrance to parking for the Tea Rooms.)

Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the prevailing conditions. All tools and equipment are provided – but you are welcome to bring anything that works especially well for you. We stop for free refreshments about half way through the work party and try to finish by about midday – but by all means leave earlier if you need to do so.

We hope to see you on Saturday.

Kind regards
