Learn how to fish with the Angling Coaching Initiative

The Angling Coaching Initiative for juniors was most successful last year and the KDAA and Maldon Angling Society together with the Braintree and Bocking Angling Society are intending to continue with coaching sessions this year. Over 100 juniors and some parents took part with 50 attending the regular coaching sessions. With the very small numbers of juniors coming into the sport this is our attempt to provide a means to introduce youngsters who may not have a family member or friend who can or do not have the time to teach them.

Dates of the coaching sessions on MAS venues will be in our new 2019 rulebook and on the ACI website at www.anglingcoachinginitiative.co.uk

However, the limiting factor was the number of volunteer coaches from the two clubs to the point where we were having to turn youngsters away. At the beginning of the year ACI had about sixteen possible volunteer coaches, some did not pursue it, others owing to other commitments and holidays could only do a few sessions. For many of the sessions we only had six coaches and twice that number of participants, ideally we would like to coach on a one to one basis.

We really need a larger pool of volunteer coaches to make this year more successful. If more members are willing to commit to just one or two sessions between May and September on any of the club venues then that would be great. You just have to be an experienced angler bearing in mind we are teaching a range of fishing methods, whip, waggler and method feeder to youngsters new to angling or those wishing to improve their skills. The only qualification required is having a calm and patient nature. It is rewarding and fun.

Please can you bring this request to the attention of your angling friends who, although may not be members of the KDAA, MAS or BBAS, might be interested in volunteering to help.

Please visit the ACI website for more information or contact Chris Burt on 07917 781299 to discuss what is involved.
